Identifying mineral scale

Hard build-up can narrow a pipe, but appearance alone does not show what the deposit is. Inspection should separate deposited material from the pipe wall, joints, liners and anything introduced during earlier work.

The pipe material and condition matter just as much as the scale. Previous repairs or linings may limit the tools that can be used without causing further damage.

Choosing a removal method

Effective cleaning depends on the deposit, the equipment and nozzle arrangement, water flow and access. Pressure by itself is not a cleaning specification, and increasing it does not automatically improve the result.

Some hard deposits are better dealt with mechanically or with more than one method. Whatever is loosened also has to be recovered rather than pushed into another part of the system.

Removed material and washwater

Before cleaning, the drainage and recovery route should be understood so that loosened solids and washwater do not carry contamination elsewhere. On an industrial system, material removed from the pipe may need to be managed as waste according to what it contains and where it came from.

High-pressure water jetting can cause severe injection injuries. The job therefore needs competent operators and controls suited to the equipment and work area; a pressure figure on its own cannot define those controls.

Checking the pipe after cleaning

Inspection after cleaning should show whether the required passage has been restored and whether the work has exposed damage or other restrictions. If scale returns, the cause may lie in the process or the condition of the system rather than in the cleaning itself.
